We are looking for our next Director of Development to join a team of dedicated and inspired professionals. The Director of Development will be responsible for creating and executing a strategic development plan to advance the school's fundraising goals, including annual giving, major gifts, foundation grants, corporate support, and special events, while building relationships within the community.
Job Summary
The Director of Development plans and implements comprehensive giving programs that increase operating support for the school and build our reserves to ensure financial sustainability. Reporting to the Head of School, the Director will work closely with the school’s leadership team, including the board of trustees’ development committee. The Director is responsible for creating a strong culture of philanthropy throughout the school community while honoring the existing school culture and values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Development will:
- Establish and execute forward-thinking, goal-driven development plans and programs that optimally grow the annual, major, and occasional capital campaigns.
- Work with the Head of School and the board development committee to evaluate each year’s giving programs and develop goals and objectives for the following year.
- Oversee all aspects of the development program, including annual giving, grants, alumni, special events, and database management.
- Partner with the Head of School to develop a plan for the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors and the stewardship of donors.
- Think strategically and formulate new ways to educate the Woodland Hill community (parents, faculty/staff, alumni) about philanthropy at Woodland Hill.
- Identify, recruit, and train the volunteers necessary to help with fundraising efforts and establish strong working relationships with these individuals.
- Maintain the development calendar, ensuring it is coordinated with the school calendar.
- Design and implement targeted events, including the annual gala.
- Strengthen relationships with the school’s alumni both locally and nationally, and continuously improve alumni programming in partnership with the Director of Admissions and the Director of Communications.
- Maintain a database of all contributors and provide development reports as required.
- Identify corporate and foundation funding opportunities and help write grant applications.
- Manage the development budget, forecasting needs and meeting budget targets.
- In conjunction with the Head of School, Director of Communication, and Director of Admissions, prepare and arrange production for solicitation materials (direct mailings, volunteer packets, verbal script materials).
- Develop and maintain a highly collaborative relationship with the Head of School, the Board President, the Executive Committee, the Development Committee Chair, and individual board members, supporting them in all their fundraising responsibilities and accompanying them on donor visits when appropriate.
- Serve on the Woodland Hill Administrative Team, collaborating with colleagues to advance the school's mission.
Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
- 5+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including management of fundraising campaigns
- Appreciation for and commitment to independent school education and culture
- A track record of fundraising success
- Ability to develop and execute a high-level, multi-tiered fundraising strategy across multiple constituencies
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work graciously with all the school’s constituents while maintaining discretion and confidentiality
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong data analysis and public speaking abilities
- Strategic thinker with a growth mindset

- Proficiency in database management
